Hari Nyepi Cakra 1938 (Bali Day of Silence)

Bali

Wednesday 9 March to Thursday 10 March
Bali Ugliness Inc. Jalan Anywhere in Bali

This year the Bali day of silence occurs on 9th March. Weeks before, every Banjar has several crews competing to make the ugliest Ogoh Ogoh from Papier mache, to be paraded around the village the night before Nyepi, then burned as a sign to evil spirits to basically 'get lost'. Go out on Nyepi Eve with your camera; some scenes are truly worth the effort. Some sculptures are truly horrendous. Then get ready to disappear from 6.30 am on Nyepi morning until 6.30 the following day. The streets are empty so if you dare to venture out of your lodgings you will get a sharp response from patrolling 'Pecalang' or temple police to get back under cover.
