Description

Begin your day before dawn with a pickup from your hotel and head to Kintamani. Upon arrival, hop into a 4WD jeep and journey across volcanic black sands and rugged lava fields formed from Mount Batur’s historic eruptions. Climb to a high viewpoint and wait for the sunrise. As the sky glows with shades of orange and gold, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views overlooking Mount Batur, Mount Abang, Lake Batur, and even Mount Rinjani on clear days. Sip a warm drink, take photos with the stunning volcanic landscape, and explore the fascinating lava rocks and caldera area before continuing your journey. After the jeep experience, head to the lakeshore of Batur. From here, a local boat will carry you across the calm waters of Lake Batur to Desa Trunyan, a secluded and culturally unique village located on the eastern side of the lake. The boat ride offers peaceful views of the volcano, the lake, and the surrounding cliffs. Desa Trunyan is one of the oldest villages in Bali and home to the Bali Aga, the island’s original indigenous people who preserve ancient customs that predate modern Balinese Hindu traditions. What makes Trunyan truly remarkable is its open-air burial ritual. Unlike other Balinese communities that cremate the dead, the people of Trunyan place the bodies of the deceased on the ground, covered with only woven bamboo frames, and leave them to decompose naturally. There is no unpleasant odor, thanks to a sacred and rare tree called Taru Menyan (“the fragrant tree”), whose natural aroma neutralizes all scents. This ritual site, known as Sema Wayah, is considered holy and is protected by the community. Trunyan is believed to date back thousands of years. The village has its own ancient laws, ceremonies, temples, and social structure. Visitors are expected to behave respectfully and dress modestly, as the area is considered sacred. Photography is allowed at certain spots, but some areas may be restricted depending on local rules. Your local guide will explain the history, traditions, and spiritual beliefs of the Trunyan people, giving you a deeper understanding of one of Bali’s most culturally rare communities.
