Description

Step into the story of Klungkung, once the most powerful royal capital in Bali, where art, spirituality, and history are deeply intertwined. Your experience begins around 10:00 a.m. in Semarapura, the modern heart of Klungkung, where you’ll meet your local English-speaking guide. From here, you’ll explore the legacy of a kingdom that shaped Bali’s cultural identity for centuries. In the 15th and 16th centuries, nearby Gelgel was the seat of the Majapahit dynasty in Bali. By the 17th century, royal authority shifted to Klungkung, marking a golden era of classical Balinese art, architecture, and court tradition. But Klungkung is also remembered for its courage. In 1908, it became the site of Bali’s last royal resistance against Dutch colonial forces, culminating in the historic puputan, a symbolic act that marked the end of the island’s traditional kingdoms. During this half-day experience, you’ll explore the city through a curated selection of cultural encounters, tailored to your interests: Visit a sacred kris maker Meet a Balinese priest and one of the island’s remaining kris forgers. Learn how this asymmetrical dagger is carefully crafted from layered iron and nickel. More than a weapon, the kris is a spiritual heirloom believed to hold energy, protection, and ancestral stories. Visit a ceremonial bell maker Discover how ritual bells are forged and why they play an essential role in temple ceremonies and daily offerings across Bali. Explore Klungkung’s traditional market Walk through the lively day market, where colorful textiles, fresh spices, and local produce reveal the rhythm of everyday life. Step inside Kertha Gosa Enter the historic royal courthouse pavilion, renowned for its detailed ceiling murals illustrating karma, justice, heaven, and hell within Balinese cosmology. This experience is ideal for travelers who want more than sightseeing. It’s an invitation to understand the spirit of Bali through its royal past, sacred crafts, and living traditions.
