Bali Island is part of the Indonesian Archipelago and consists of eight regencies (kabupaten) and one city  (kota) Denpasar, the island's capital city. The regencies and city are administrative, political and agricultural regions that have replaced Bali's earlier kingdoms. Central Bali’s northern area consists of cool, tropical forests, waterfalls, and contoured rice paddies which seem to hang from the mountainside. The paddies are watered by the Subak canal system, which is over a thousand years old and now a UNESCO protected site. You will marvel at how these terraced rice fields stay suspended on the hillsides, and how the locals work to produce rice on their various levels. All around this area one will find farms producing vegetables, strawberries and tropical fruit, which can be bought at village markets and along the roadside.

Our guide to North Bali - in the Regency of Buleleng by our Bali local expert - In addition to the coastal route from East Bali, two roads lead to North Bali and the stunning coastal scenery overlooking the Bali Sea. The road through Bedugul will take you right into the old, tree-lined city of Singaraja, the Dutch administrative capital of Nusa Tenggara until 1953. One can also take the road from Gianyar through Bangli and Kintamani, passing the great volcanoes Gunung Agung (3142m), G.Batur (1717m) and G.Penulisan (1745m). When you reach the coast you will be looking at the Bali Sea. Turn left for Singaraja.

Each of Bali’s southern districts varies noticeably from the next. Kuta, Legian and Seminyak,  just minutes from Ngurah Rai Airport, offer sun, sea and waves, surfing lessons, hotels and lodges from budget to 5 star. Souvenir shops and restaurants abound and the night life thumps along into the early hours. The streets are lined with colourful stores selling everything from surf boards to souvenirs. Take the kids to the Waterbom Park, a truly fantastic day out at an aquatic park for the whole family! Bali Slingshot is one of most scary extreme sports located in Kuta Centre. Not recommended for people with heart problems or fear of heights, nor is the Hackett Bungy Jump.

West Bali consists mainly of a series of passive volcanoes within the Taman Nasional Bali Barat Park, which covers 19,000 hectares on the western tail of the island. (Have you noticed yet that Bali appears like a giant fish in the ocean?)  It also includes 7,000 hectares of coral reef and coastal water. The coast road skirts south of the Prapat Agung Peninsula - from which it seems one could almost touch the island of Java. Gilimanuk is the port for Java-bound ferries, which depart almost every half-hour.
