Description

Your Balinese cooking experience begins at a lively traditional market in the Ubud area, where you meet your chef. Away from the tourist trail, you are guided through the stalls to see, smell, and touch the fresh ingredients that give Balinese food its soul fragrant lemongrass, galangal, turmeric root, kaffir lime, candlenut, chili, and blocks of palm sugar. Your chef explains what each ingredient is, how it is used, and how local families choose the freshest produce for the day. It is the perfect sensory introduction before you ever pick up a knife. From the market you travel to an open-air village kitchen, surrounded by greenery and the calm of rural Bali. With aprons on and your ingredients ready, you cook side by side under warm, personal guidance from your chef — relaxed, friendly, and completely hands-on. You will start with the foundation of the island's cuisine: 'Base Genep', the aromatic Balinese spice paste that flavors almost every traditional dish. Grinding and blending the spices yourself, you will understand why it is the heart of the kitchen. From there you prepare a full, authentic menu completely from scratch, which may include Sate Lilit (minced satay on lemongrass skewers), Chicken Betutu (slow-cooked spiced chicken), Jukut Urab (fresh coconut and vegetable salad), Nasi Goreng, and a classic dessert such as Kolak or Dadar Gulung (Balinese coconut pancake). Everything is tailored to you. Choose a regular, vegetarian, or fully vegan menu, and simply let us know of any allergies in advance. Flexible morning and afternoon start times let you plan the class around the rest of your day. Come as a couple or with friends in a private class, or share the experience with a few other travellers in a friendly small group. When the cooking is finished, the most rewarding part begins: you sit down and enjoy the delicious meal you created with your own hands, served with a welcome drink and freshly brewed Balinese coffee or tea. Before you leave, you receive a recipe booklet so you can recreate every dish at home, along with photos capturing your experience in the kitchen. More than a class, this is a relaxed, hands-on way to connect with Balinese culture and with the people you share it with.
