Description
Begin your day at Taman Ujung Water Palace, built in 1919 by the last King of Karangasem, I Gusti Bagus Jelantik. The palace was designed as a retreat for meditation, a venue for royal ceremonies, and a place to welcome foreign dignitaries during Bali’s pre-independence era. Taman Ujung is famous for its long stone bridges stretching across wide reflective pools, its elegant floating pavilions, and its unique architectural fusion of Balinese carvings, Dutch colonial arches, and Chinese decorative motifs. This blend reflects the cosmopolitan worldview of the Karangasem royal family, who maintained close relations with foreign traders and colonial administrators. As you explore the palace grounds, walk along elevated pathways that overlook the pools, ascend a hilltop viewpoint offering panoramic views of the palace framed by mountains and coastline, and learn how the complex was heavily damaged by the 1963 Mt. Agung eruption and the 1979 earthquake. From the elegance of Taman Ujung, continue to Tirta Gangga Water Palace, another masterpiece built by the same Karangasem king. Named after the River Ganges, symbolizing purity in Hindu tradition, Tirta Gangga centers around natural spring pools believed to hold holy water. Locals still visit the complex for purification rituals and religious ceremonies. Walk through beautifully sculpted gardens, explore koi-filled ponds with stepping stones, and learn how water is revered in Balinese cosmology as a source of life, balance, and spiritual cleansing. Every statue, fountain, and basin here carries meaning — from protective guardians to representations of the divine. Next, step into a very different world at Tenganan Pegringsingan Village, one of Bali’s oldest Bali Aga (indigenous pre-Hindu) settlements. Unlike most Balinese villages influenced by Majapahit Javanese culture, Tenganan has preserved its own ancient customs, architecture, and social organization. As you walk through Gates A–B–C, stone paths, and communal pavilions, learn about the village’s unique calendar system, strict endogamous marriage rules, traditional ceremonies, and its position as one of the few places on Earth where Geringsing double-ikat cloth is made. After exploring cultural and spiritual histories, your final stop brings you to a relaxing local coffee experience. At a small rural plantation, learn about Bali’s traditional coffee cultivation and roasting process, sample various coffees and herbal teas, and enjoy a peaceful countryside atmosphere.Includes
